PROMPT #1

DUE AT THE START OF CLASS ON TUESDAY, MAY 22:

Nurse Ratched is society's representative in the ward (she tries to mold the men like the Combine does.) What "Ratcheds" do you know in your life?

In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Nurse Ratched seems to be a very controlling, dictator like kind of person. Every person on the ward fears Nurse Ratched. They are even afraid to laugh given that at a single outburst Nurse Ratched takes out her clipboard and starts taking notes on their "ironic" behavior. Everything must go her way or she will become even more controlling.

Everybody is affected by someone who is in some way similar to Nurse Ratched. Out of everyone I know I would have to say that there are several Nurse Ratcheds affecting my life. This includes parents and their insane insistance that all of their children must eat their broccoli. It includes teachers who insist that homework is to be done at home and handed in on time the next day. The Nurse Ratcheds of my life ultimatly consist of all the people who demand something of me each day and insist it must be done their way.

In Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest we see Nurse Ratched as very "large" and dominant character at the beginning of the novel. Everyone has a person in their life that plays this role: overpowering and slightly frightening. Many of us would say our parents because they are constantly telling us what to do and what not to do. Although I could not think of any one person as an example of the Nurse Ratched in my life, I would have to say that it would probably be those people who use there size and strength to try to intimidate others. Just because they are bigger does not make them stronger or more intelligent. Because Nurse Ratched is intimidating to many of the patients, they forget what they are truely capable of.

In One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Nurse Ratched is the dominator and controls the patients lives. Its hard to decide any one person but examples of "Nurse Ratched" that I know would be parents -who try and tell you what to do and control and make your decisions for you- and sometimes even teachers who are "over the top"(I think that there is at least one of those in all our memories!). When I imagine life's everyday "Nurse Ratcheds" I think of bullies and those who need to mold other people to their particular way of life because they must and -at least to them- be right.
A girl I knew in elementary school could be a sort of Nurse Ratched because she constantly had conflicts with how I was and what I did or did not do-I could not be independent and realize my own capabilities with her because she was taking over my life. This is what Nurse Ratched symbolizes.

Honestly I would have to say that everyone, men included, are somewhat like Nurse Ratched in their own way. Whether its young women dreading men in general, or males putting each other down in competitive ways. Although it may not be a good thing, at some point in life everyone would have to admit to belittling someone else. With that said, there are plenty of Nurse Ratcheds all around us! ~Stephanie T. Nurse Ratched is an extremly unique character, and I can't say I know a person exactly like her (thankfully). However, I'd have to say that my mom shares some of Nurse Ratched's more acceptable qualities. She is an extremly strong woman, (as well as tall) and she is an advocate for the strength of all women. She sometimes resents the weak stereotypes assosiated with women, yet, unlike Nurse Ratched, she appreciates the oppurtunities and benifits that one obtaines simply wy being a woman. Unlike some of the exreme suffragetes of the early twentieth century, she appreciates some of the ways men act towards women- such as opening doors, pulling out chairs- as acts of kindness and age-old curtesy, not a symbol of the inability of women to do those things themselves.
Thats it!

In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Nurse Ratched is portrayed as a controlling character who becomes angry and upset if everything and everyone are not up to her standards of perfection.

I can't think of one specific person that possesses Nurse Rached's characteristics. However, parents come to mind, because they have a lot of control over your life, and sometimes make decisions for you instead of allowing you to learn from your own mistakes, and are upset when you do not do something the way they want it to be done.

Also, like Angel said, anyone who tries to mold someone to their way of life, and make them into something they're not through intimidating them.

Nurse Ratched, in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, creates a fear within the patients and other staff members. Her machine-like qualities further emphasize her strict rules and regulations.

I do not think I have any Nurse Ratcheds in my life. If I did, however, my aunts would be Nurse Ratcheds. Although they do not intimidate me a lot, they tend to "emasculate" those who are unfamiliar with them. The image of the woman who can dominate a household as well as a business setting is frightening to a lot of people.

The most universal Nurse Ratched that I can think of is propaganda in general and especially television. The media and television shows generally seem to stress conformity and when there is a non-conformist, a.k.a. R.A. McMurphy, they are often ridiculed by society. Although it is not often said out loud, the television teaches that being a conformist and following the rules is how everyone should live.

I think I would have to agree with both Stephani T. and Laura Kleman. Everyone has belittled someone in their lives, whether it be because you are stonger or suppode you are smarter, we all have done it. I think the person who does this the most to me in my life,is not a person at all, but rather, a group of inconsiderate, rude, and untruthful people. Also called the media. In the media we see this huge and overbearing description of what women should, look like, and what men what us to behave like. This is where i pull from Luara.
I mean really, the women in magazines aren't sexy, they look like malnurished little children in thier mothers clothes. This representation of what "perfection" is destroys the lives of millions of women world wide. All of them, starving themselves to be perfect size two's. This subtle propaganda to me is my nurse ratched. huge powerful, overbearing, and above all, manipulative.

Appearing in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Nurse Ratched is made out to be a very controlling character. She uses her authority to intimidate patients into doing what she wishes. Because she is in a higher position and a stronger person, she usually gets her way in manipulating other people. There are several examples of a Nurse Ratched in the lives of everyday people. Parents and teachers are of a higher authority, and therefore can demand things out of their children and students. Government authorities use their positions to demand things such as taxes to the people.

Nurse Ratched is obviously a deceiving character. Although she looks innocent and pure, she is actually a mechanical beast who has no feelings and doesn't seem to care about anyone. If I had to choose someone in my life who can be characterized in the same way, it would have to be my crew coach. She does not look innocent and she doesnt act innocently but her authority irritates me. She has the ability to say and do whatever she wants, no matter how absurd it may be, but can get away with it because she has this power. Nobody can protest for fear of getting kicked off the team, being on her bad side, or not being put in a boat that you want to. The decisions she makes are a lot of times stupid but they cannot be changed or influenced by anyone.

In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Nurse Ratched is depicted as a decieving character. Her physical traits are known as "big" and dominent as well as her personality. She often uses her dominating personality to control other peoples actions. I believe everyone has a nurse Ratched in their life. Weather its a childhood bully or a boss who does not listen to their worker Nurse Ratched's exist to every person.

Oh lord i totally called clemmie saying her Ratched was coach lee.
I know a few will like this coming comment and others will oppose.

In Cukoos nest nurse ratched is the antagonist, always ruining the fun or stealing freedom. I would have to say that the police are like Nurse Ratched. Though the police are doing their jobs at working for the welfare of the community, sometimes people could just be left alone. Justice is in the eye of the beholder. Yes, there are certain things that should never be done like homicide with unfair motive or stealing what does not belong to the theif, but sometimes there is more to the story and it seems that the Justice system sometimes is blind to that. Nurse Ratched often does things just to solidify her position as head of the Patients, like control McMurphy or make other patients look week to keep them all in her control. Like the police, I wouldn't trust Nurse Ratched to finish the job of keeping things even on the outside and in.

this has been said many times already but i'll say it again, Nurse Ratched i s universal charcter. she represents everyone and everything who/ that gets their victory from destroying and stealing the happiness of others. every person that has ever but someone down to make themselves feel better is a Nurse Ratched. every person who has ever pruposely crushed the dream of another is a Nurse Ratched. we have all probably had the oppurtunity of having a Nurse Ratched in our lives as well as being a Nurse Ratched to others.

My Nurse Ratched is definately my crew coach. Like the manipulative nurse, she's nice when it suits her, but generally she's rather out of her mind. Common sense is not an attribute she can brag about and her decisions are typically based on very little and turn out badly. Like Nurse Ratched, my coach is the antithesis of a people person and when she tries to be it makes those who really know her crazy. Her authority will alwaus be a source of annoyance as she is completely imcompetant for the position. However, (and I haven't read far enough to know if this is remotely true in Cuckoo's Nest) her antagonism unites the team in a way few other things could.

I would have to say that I don't have a specific Nurse Ratched in my life. Possibly certain unreasonable teachers could serve as a controlling force in my life. Any authority figure who gives the reasoning, " because I said so," or " because im the adult in this situation," clearly feels superior to the student or child they are talking to. Teachers who feel that they can hold students after class or after school without considering that they are inconveniencing the other teachers and parents of those students also resemble Nurse Ratched. However, no one in my life is nearly as controlling or conforming as Nurse Ratched.

Everyone has a character like Nurse Ratched in their lives; the controlling person who tries to dictate how a person lives their life. Most adults I know follow the Nurse Ratched persona and affect my life. Teachers who push me saying that this is right, or this is wrong, or how my fraction does not look like a fraction even though it is obvious that it is. My parents, especially my dad, are Nurse Ratcheds. Some rules they push I respect, but some just make no sense. Like how Sarah D points out a parent's insane insistence that all children must eat broccoli.

Not that I consider this a Nurse Ratched in my life, but I felt the need to point it out. It is not a bad thing, but some religions could be considered a Nurse Ratched. How Christians have the Bible, or Jews have the Torah, these books display guidelines for how people follow their specific religion.

Nurse Ratched proves to be the controlling and manipyulative charcter in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. As for whom is my Nurse Rayched in my life, I would say SOCIETY. Society rules, restrictions and ambitions tend to conflict with many peoples ideas. It convinces people that knowledge and money are the only way to succeed in life. However this fact is not entirely true, and also does not guarantee happiness. If I need many piece of green paper to determine my status when I'm older, then I might as well have none.

In Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest one of the first characters that we are introduced to is Nurse Ratched, a dominating and imasculating woman. Many people find that they have a Nurse Ratched figure in their life, someone who makes them feel like they are not as strong or smart as they truly are. I do not have a specific person who could be labled as the Nurse Ratched of my life, but i think the people who use their intelligence as a way of making themsleves feel superior to others, thus making others feel terribly inferior are the people that are most closly related the Nurse Ratched. Sometimes it is not physical appearence or a harsh demeanor that can intimidate you, it is the inablity to stand up for yourself or prove yourself because of the way other people treat you. To know that you are smart and to know that you have the power to influence and control other peoples behavior is a tremendous thing and it can have negative affects on people if that ability is used in a negative way. For someone to render you unable to stick up for yourself just through their words can be much more intimidating that by actual force.

In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey a female is controlling the male protagonists. Nurse Ratched has insecurities, which causes her to always feel the need to be dominant. Every human can share some relation in possessing the need to be in control of ones life and for some, stabilization of their own life means total control over others in order to protect themselves from harm.
So far in my life I have met one "Ratched" and she was a single mother. This young women with three daughters totally repressed herself from the opposite sex because of one faulty relationship with a man. She refused to allow herself to move on and continued to take out her hatred for this man on all the men around her. She neglected all attention men have attempted to give her as she holds a grudge against males because she is afraid of being hurt again. This young women has isolated herself and her daughters from men. Over time she has become a sexist and finds a way to point out every flaw in a male, whether she has met them or not

My Nurse Ratched is my crew coach, Leonore Olmsted Sullivan. Lee shows off her six foot tall beasts of rowers to other coaches and says how amazing they are but not once actually says anything positive or encouraging to these very same girls. Lee brags to people about how helpful we are and how we don't give her much trouble, but she thinks we are all incapable of listening to directions. Lee pretends to be on top of her team and tells people she had everything under control but is actually too consumed with herself to properly coach. Leonore never has anything nice to say and always believes she is right. It never occurs to her that she may not always have the latest information and that she needs to show some compassion for a job well done.

Nurse Ratched is a woman with with a profound yearning for dominating control. She is an extremely pervading force in the lives of all the characters of Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Nurse Ratched exerts her control ruthlessly but more importantly it seems she seeks to do so because she enjoys it. She emasculates all those around her while she eliminates her own femininity .
There are a few people who have resembled Ratched in my life but the one who by far stands out the most is my second grade teacher. Most strikingly similar to Ratched is that quite frankly this woman had very successfully eliminated her feminine physical features(someone once referred to her as " a hulking mass of a woman"). The way my teacher would walk generally exuded an overwhelming sense that she knew she had control(albeit over a room of 8 year olds) and that she relished in it. She was quite menacing not only in her appearance but in her disposition towards her students (and as I recall especially towards myself). She most definitely frightened me at the time. It's hard to look back on it more rationally now when I already have such a negative connotation associated with her but then I realize this must be how Kesey felt as he looked backed on his experiences as a janitor and developed Nurse Ratched's character.

At times, one who is given authority over a situation may obtain such traits similar to Nurse Ratched. For example, a person who is put in a leader's position may abuse their power. Like Cara said, some teachers take advantage of their significance by keeping students afterschool, or by simply feeling superior over them. Moreover, this mindset only sets the stage for future leaders. It is important to set positive examples for the next generation, because history can repeat itself. Other examples include politicial figures, someone's boss, or plainly just one who is emerging to alter another's ideals.
I think that it is important to be a leader. In spite of this, such a compelling personality must be believable with tremendous understanding. There will always be Nurse Ratched's in our society. Still, it is these certain "Nurse Ratched's" who enable us to pinpoint the bitterness of society - it is simply part of the human condition.

In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the antagonist Nurse Ratched is very demanding and wants it her way all the time. "It's her way or the highway." The people in the ward smurks at how controlling she is and how much she watches over them like a hawk also record every little thing that the patients do.

In my life the Nurse Ratched is my cousin Dajah who thinks she can boss everybody and tell them what to do. She always wants her way, and if she doesn't get it she yells and scream until she does gets it. She is always telling me to do this and that in a certain way because my way is wrong. She's always yelling and bullying me on how to do stuff right, and get this....... she's younger than me!

Nurse Ratched provides for a character of which many people can relate theough a figure of authority in their own lives. If i were to chose one example in my life of a Nurse Ratched, it'd probably have to be one of my aunts on my father's side. In terms of emmasculation I feel it is present to some extent amoung both me and by father because both my aunt's are his elder giving a snese of authority. Though it isnt quite to the extent of Nurse Ratched, my personal Nurse Ratched that are reflected in my aunts are proof to how universal a charcter nNurse Ratched is in the book.

Nurse Ratched is potrayed as a strong, controlling, mechanical sort of person. She orders the patients to obey her and do as she asks, yet she still puts up this image of her being perfect around everyone else.

Everyone has a person in their life that is like Nurse Ratched. I think the Nurse Ratched's in my life are the people who have more power than me and intimidate me to get me to listen to them. For some people it could be a parent, teacher, or even a classmate or a person in their group of friends. Although I do not have a specific Nurse Ratched figure of my own, I think that it would be anybody who is bully who uses their apperance and attitude to scare people and to manipulate them.

Erika H. said...

Nurse Rached, in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, appears to be a nice woman, but that is only because she has a way of manipulating. Really she is just cruel and things are either her way or wrong. Personally my nurse Ratched is a teacher, this teacher gives the rules and opinions, but allows no room for interpretation or an alternate opinion. This teacher appears nice to many and almost all but that is because she can manipulate students thoughts. Most students fear questioning a teacher and that is what encourages this domination, but my nurse Ratched doesn't control me I see her manipulation and ignore it. This teacher is not totally bad but she could learn to listen to other opinions than her own.

Nurse Ratched is most certainly a unique character, as many have suggested. Her overwhelmingly centralized, unyielding power over everybody committed to and employed at the ward is a clear manifestation of her dominance and control. She is, in my opinion, the über-autocrat. I am glad to say that I do not personally know anyone who exhibits all of the qualities of Nurse Ratched. However, everyone has a little piece of Nurse Ratched inside them. There are certain people who constantly belittle and degrade those around them; some chose to be control freaks and power hungry; and others are heartless and could care less about others.

Unknown said...

Like most aspects of a figure similar to Nurse Ratched, if you lose one battle, you back to step one, you must win every battle to defeat those "Nurse Ratcheds" in society. Each person will come across a Nurse Ratched figure in their lives and somehow must overcome it, or they will end up like the men in the ward, lost and controlled. A McMurphy figure is much more rare, someone who is almost free of the bonds of the Combine, although each person has these two conflicting figures inside them, and around them, which they must learn to work with.
No one in my life has as much control as Nurse Ratched, although my parents sometimes emulate certain qualities that make the Nurse ignorant about the patients. Even if they are unaware they are doing it they sometimes use manipulation to exercise control, that is not always for the benefit of anyone but themselves, like Nurse Ratched. However, our society has grown into the idea of control and manipulation and harmful gain, and we must be aware that there are figures out there who will try to dominate others for personal gain.

The character, Nurse Ratched is portrayed as cold and machine-like through the eyes of Chief Bromden. Using her position within the ward, Nurse Ratched establishes dominance and power to make people like Bromden feel inferior. There is not one specific person that acts as a "Nurse Ratched" in my life. However, people with similar characteristics do exist throughout society. Whether it is a parent, teacher, boss, older sibling, or even friend, there are people that manipulate and decieve others. Using power, wealth, status, age, or knowledge, they can make themselves feel superior and make others feel weak. Unfortunately, people, such as Nurse Ratched, are given opportunies to help others using their assets and instead take advantage of the situation to gain what they desire. Overall, my idea of a "Nurse Ratched" is someone who is not tolerant towards the opinions of others, does not help others, and most importantly does not allow others to feel comfortable with their current situations.

I cannot say that I have met a person who strongly emulates Nurse Ratched, but I can draw a paralell between what she stands for and the standards and pressures of society. The call for conformity is always a prevailant force, for our age the pressure to go to college, get a steady job, then settle down, our future is mapped out for us by our parents, teachers, and culture. Although much bleaker than ours, the patients have their lives planned for them by the authority of Nurse Ratched. Expectations to follow general societal rules are as strong as if they were blatantly set down by a greater authority, and the immediate put down of rebelion is common in both Nurse Ratched and society, it takes a long time for change to sink in.

In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kensey illustrates "Big" Nurse Ratched, who is a women filled with the stern power and authority as strong as a man's if not stronger. Even though she is able to put on a facade over her femininity that might be imprudently overseen, there are still little things such as her breasts that prove otherwise. i would simply consider her pure evil since she enjoys the misery of others and always plans on intensifying it like a tyrant dictator.
I would definitely have to say that my Nurse Ratched would be my Crew Coach. Although we push ourselves to the furthest extent possible, she decides to discourage us with her lacking sense of morality and commonsense, but just like the patients we have no control over her what so ever.In addition she is very capable of putting on a facade of seeming like an innocent person in front of others, yet we all know the truth.

Nurse Ratched is portayed as a very powerful, controlling force which dictates how the patients in the hospital should live. She only achieves this power due to their sense of fear, similar to the Party in 1984 as well. My Nurse Ratched would definately have to be my crew coach, Lee. She is very intimidating and always seems to be right about everything. She has her nice days, but fails to have any positive communication with the team or real encouragement. We are never rewarded for our achievements, yet given the "good job, but you could have done better" act. She certainly reflects all of the beastly, controlling and decieving aspects that Nurse Ratched consists of, and because she has the power to dictate anything she wants to us, she usually ends up getting what she wants.

Nurse Ratched symbolizes the inhuman qualities of perfection. She appears flawless and emotionless and expects the rest of the world to be like her. "Ratcheds" are people and forces that have power and use their power to "mold" individuals. Like beforementioned, the media and televison could be seen as a "Ratched". They give an unrealistic view of how a person should be. Perfection is unnatural and impossible. People who often correct other's small mistakes could also be seen as "Ratcheds". They use their power (intelligence, status, etc.) to reveal other people's imperfections.

sorry this is late. i just remembered :(

Nurse Ratched represents the people and forces in society that attempt to control every aspect of life. She has that “my way, or the highway” mindset, and presents herself as intimidating. She even resents her large breasts, symbolic of her femininity, because she thinks it will detract from her power and authority over others. I don’t think I’ve experienced someone with a personality quite as extreme as Nurse Ratched, but next in line would probably be my mother. She always wants something done her way even when it comes down to personal thing like my room. She tries to shelter me from the outside world and I barely have any freedom. Also my dad tries to control my choices as far as education, like telling me where I can and can’t go to college and what my major can’t be (psychology).

Feminist have come so far to overcome men in the world. Nurse Ratched, in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, seem to be at the peck off her feminist mentality. However, She is not a feminist. She walks around with her nose in the air with an air of confidence around her. She does not want to just belittle the men, but everyone around her. Seeing as she heads the department in that pysc ward, the patients, who already can not survive in the "real" world, are the perfect people to belittle and control.

I agree with Stephanie and what see said about everyone having Nurse Ratched in them. However, some more than others. My worst Nurse Ratched would be my grandmother. She Trys to use the things she is insucure of herself or when she was a child to belittle others that are younger than her. seeing as she goes by the saying "respect your elders", She expects for everyone one to listen and obey. As does nurse Ratched.
